Iran War affects International Cargo Services in Pakistan

Fuel prices hiked as Iran closed the strait of hormuz following american israeli strikes. This has affected the whole world but third world countries are hit the most bearing most of the brunt. Price hikes for food and other items are sky rocketting in pakistan as everything is linked to transport cost. This has also affected a major important segment in pakistan which is the export industry. According to Sialkot based sources, factories are manufacturing their products but the export cost has rendered businesses useless. Cargo rates for international shipments have increased heavily leading to a big reduction in international shipments and couriers. According to Khan, the CEO of PQ International Courier and Cargo Services worldwide have been seriously affected. Pakistan to USA cargo has reduced by 40 percent while Pakistan to UK Courier services have seen a reduction of 45 percent according to Khan.

If the war does not end sooner, the costs of everyday items will increase 5x fold while the export industry in pakistan will face a serious survival challenge. The rise in international shipping costs will eventually affect the common man, bearing the brunt of the angst of the international powers.

Before the war, shipping costs from Pakistan to UK used to be around 1500 per kg, it is now 2500 per kg. While shipping cost from Pakistan to USA have increased similarly, the costs of sea shipping have doubled. Not only that, most shipments going through the sea routes remained blocked for weeks, causing million in losses to both factory manufacturers, exporters and the shipping agencies themselves.

According to Islamabad based International courier and Cargo service providers, which moves shipments from Pakistan to worldwide, most cargo agents have lost 5 to 10 million last month alone. Everyone is hoping the war will end soon and shipping rates will return to normalcy.

We spoke to Mr Sajid, the owner of the branch of PQ International Cargo in Sialkot, the increase in cargo rates led many manufacturers to shift their supplies to local markets. International quality products destined for US, UK and europe are now channeled to local pakistani markets.
